It’s very clever the way the author has combined a detective story with urban fantasy – a little like Rivers of London does, but better – the characters are so much more interesting and the author makes you really care about them.
The lead, DI Brighton is very likeable. He is an honest, hardworking, dedicated officer who clearly loves his family but like most detectives, work comes first. His investigation into a spate of kidnappings changes that as it impacts on his family directly. Out of the supporting cast, my favourite characters were Jeannie (as a bit of a geek, I totally relate to her), Eddie the fairy police officer who’s full of attitude, and Thundershack a brouny who made me laugh so much.
This book has everything – solid police work, action, adventure, and humour. I could not put it down, but OMG that ending! – I really need book two ASAP. I hope the wait for the sequel is not too long, but seriously I would queue up for it (and I really don’t like queuing).
